Estimation of Near-Wellbore Corrosive Conditions During CO2 Injection and Shut-In Periods: A Risk-Based Approach

This document discusses water vaporization and geochemical reactions that occur between rock and formation fluids during CO2 injection and workover operations. When CO2 is injected into deep saline aquifers, the CO2–fluid interactions create an acidic environment, which can increase the risk of corrosion in the well. Properly quantifying near-wellbore geochemical conditions is important to ensure that well material design choices are appropriate and effective for ensuring CO2 injection well integrity. The focus of this study is on the prediction of the reactive transport dynamics in the near-wellbore zone during injection, shut-in, and restart periods.
